Step-by-Step: How to Perform Hajj

1. Preparation Before Hajj

  • Set Your Intention (Niyyah):
    Perform Hajj solely for the sake of Allah (SWT).
  • Ihram:
    Before entering the Miqat (designated boundary), men wear two white unstitched cloths while women wear modest Islamic dress.
  • Talbiyah:
    Recite the supplication – “Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik...” – continuously after entering Ihram.

2. Arrival in Makkah – Tawaf al-Qudum

  • Upon reaching Masjid al-Haram, perform Tawaf al-Qudum (welcome Tawaf) by circling the Kaaba seven times.
  • After Tawaf, perform two rak’ahs of prayer near Maqam Ibrahim if possible.
  • Drink Zamzam water with the intention of healing and blessings.

3. Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah

  • Perform Sa’i, which means walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah.
  • Begin at Safa and end at Marwah, remembering Allah and making dua.

4. Day of Tarwiyah (8th Dhul-Hijjah) – Mina

  • Travel to Mina, a valley near Makkah.

5. Day of Arafah (9th Dhul-Hijjah)

  • Proceed to Arafat, where the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) delivered his farewell sermon.
  • Stand at Mount Arafat (Wuquf Arafah) from noon until sunset, making dua, dhikr, and asking for forgiveness.
  • This is the most important day of Hajj.
  • After sunset, travel to Muzdalifah, pray Maghrib and Isha combined, and spend the night under the open sky. Collect pebbles for the next day’s ritual.

6. Rami al-Jamarat (Stoning of the Devil) – 10th Dhul-Hijjah

  • Return to Mina and throw seven pebbles at the largest pillar (Jamrat al-Aqabah), symbolizing rejection of Shaytan.
  • After Rami, perform Qurbani (sacrifice of an animal).
  • Men shave or trim their hair; women cut a small portion of their hair. This marks partial exit from Ihram.

7. Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa’i

  • Return to Makkah and perform Tawaf al-Ifadah, an essential pillar of Hajj.
  • Perform another Sa’i between Safa and Marwah (if required, depending on Hajj type).

8. Days of Tashreeq (11th–13th Dhul-Hijjah)

  • Spend these days in Mina.
  • Each day, throw seven pebbles at each of the three Jamarat (pillars).
  • Engage in prayer, Qur’an recitation, and remembrance of Allah.

9. Tawaf al-Wada (Farewell Tawaf)

  • Before leaving Makkah, perform the Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada) as a final act of devotion.
